WELLFLEET SPRING 2010

Team Building Day
On September 15th, the fifth graders participated in a team building program run by the Champions Program. The team challenges included: Ski Race, Marble Run, Islands: California to Hawaii, Avalanche, and the Tennis Ball Challenge. The challenges each focused on the fifth grade question, what is my place in the community? After each challenge, the students had a debriefing period which discussed the importance of team work, listening skills, cooperation, and respect.

The 5th Grade students have been busy working on an interdisciplinary service-learning project revolving around the topic: ENERGY. As students continue to explore our guiding question "What is my place in the community?" they have begun to see the relationship between the energy choices made today and how these choices affect the community's future.

History Comes Alive as "Signers" of the Declaration Visit Grade 5 Classes!

We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal... sure everyone knows that Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and that it was signed in Philadelphia, PA, on July the 4th, 1776. But be honest, can you name ALL fifty-six signers of this famous document? Or rather, let me ask you: ever heard of Button Gwinnett, Caesar Rodney or Samuel Chase? No? Well, recently, as part of a two-week long project in Social Studies, 5th graders were able to step into the shoes (quite literally!) of many of these famous figures from Revolutionary America. Students learned that each member of the Continental Congress held a vital role in standing up against England; as Benjamin Franklin put it so plainly, "we must hang together, or we shall most assuredly hang separately!"
