2010 SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Water Worlds of Plymouth

Immerse yourself in the aquatic environments of Plymouth this summer. Within our town we have a diversity of vernal pools, warm water ponds, stratified lakes, rock tumbling creeks, tidal rivers, and the oceanic environments of sheltered harbors and exposed beach. Dr. Pete will compare and contrast the science of these special worlds, including, but not limited to their biology, their chemical differences, their geologic evolution, and their physical structure. Students will learn primarily in a field environment, collecting/exploring living and non-living components of each ecosystem. Various samples will be brought back to Rising Tide for microscopic and/or laboratory analysis. Students will be mentally and physically engaged and should expect to get wet and muddy.

July 19-23: 9 am – 3 pm

Instructor: Dr. Pete Sampou

Cost: $150

Limited to 12 Rising Tide students currently in grades 6,7 and 8 and past graduates of Rising Tide

Music Composition Workshop

This workshop has become bigger and better! Students will focus on creating their own music using instruments and music technology. They will participate in jam sessions and group compositions using various instruments from all over the world. Significant time will also be devoted to technology, including keyboard synthesizers, electronic drums, drum machines, effects, and computer music software. We will analyze and listen to great artists and songs, and try to incorporate those elements into student compositions. Students may pick a subject and express it through music, discovering how music can communicate and convey meaning with or without words. The musical possibilities are endless! All aspiring composers and songwriters should consider this.

July 12-16: 9 am – 3pm

Instructor: Mr. Winston Wang

Cost: $150

Limited to 10 Rising Tide students currently in grades 5-8

Music Video Studio

This summer, create a video project that reflects your individuality and creativity. Learn about filming techniques and video editing technology by working with cameras and computers hands-on. You will select music that inspires you and then design, write, direct, and produce music videos for your songs. As a part of the studio, you will examine the relationship between sounds and images, working to pair your musical selections with fitting visual imagery. You will explore the possibilities of music videos as works of art that can tell a story, send a message, or simply enhance a song. You will also learn several different camera and editing techniques to make your videos look polished and professional. You will leave the studio feeling comfortable with a video camera and Windows Movie Maker, and you will have created at least one complete music video. Come let your creativity sing! Participants should bring their own headphones on the first day.

July 19-23: 9 am – 3 pm

Instructor: Ms. Amanda Adams

Cost: $150

Limited to 15 Rising Tide students currently in grades 5-8

Summer Painting Studio

In this intensive and fun workshop, students will build on their existing drawing and painting skills through demonstrations of advanced application techniques and an expanded study of complex compositional issues. Participants will also learn how to enlarge their small sketches into large format pieces using both ancient techniques as well as modern computer technology. In addition to collaborating together on a group mural, each student will compose a 4' x 4' painting that brings these new technical skills together with their own individual creative ideas.
